From your chat to a book, step by step

Exporting the chat from WhatsApp takes two minutes. We do the rest: we read your chat from start to finish, find the best moments and turn them into a book. Here you can see every step.

1. Export the chat from WhatsApp

This happens on your phone; WhatsApp Web and the desktop app don't offer the export. Which phone do you use?

    Open the chat

    In WhatsApp, open the chat you want to turn into a book and tap the name at the top. In a group, tap the group name.

    “Export chat”

    Scroll down on that page and tap “Export chat”.

    “Without media”

    Choose “Without media”. The file stays small; you can still add your own photos later.

    Save the file

    Tap “Save to Files”. Then choose the file on our site with “Choose chat file”.

Which file?WhatsApp creates a file such as “WhatsApp Chat - Emma.zip”. There's no need to open it: upload the .zip or .txt file as it is.

Uploading from a computer?In the last step, email the file to yourself (or AirDrop it from an iPhone), save it on your computer and choose it from there.

The labels may differ slightly depending on your WhatsApp version.

2. How the book is made

After the upload you see what happens at every step. You pay before your chat is read; the example book shows beforehand what you get.

    Choose the chat file. It is read in your browser first: you see straight away how many messages there are, who wrote them and which period the chat covers.

    Choose the people and the relationship

    2 minutes

    Decide how the names appear in the book; if someone wrote from two numbers, merge them. Choose the relationship (couple, family, siblings, friends) and the kind of book; the tone and the moments we look for follow from it.

    Decide what stays out

    1 minute

    Explicit content, health and money, or arguments can be left out. You decide.

    Pay or redeem a coupon

    1 minute

    PDF by chat size: up to 10,000 messages €7.90, up to 50,000 messages €9.90, up to 150,000 messages €14.90, up to 250,000 messages €19.90. Printed book €39.90 + €4.90 shipping (for now within Germany only), PDF included. A coupon code makes it cheaper or free. Only then does the AI start.

    Your chat is read

    a few minutes

    The AI reads the whole chat, picks the most meaningful moments, gives the chapters titles and writes one or two sentences of introduction for each. Your messages are printed as they are; no message is changed or made up. You can close the page meanwhile and come back via “My projects”.

    Look through your book

    as long as you like

    Keep or drop chapters, design the cover and add photos if you like. The statistics and the “Whose words?” page are already there; download the PDF right away.

3. What happens to your chat?

  • The file is first read only in your browser; nothing is sent until you start the book.
  • When you start the book, the chat texts you included are stored privately for processing and deleted automatically after 7 days.
  • OpenAI processes the chat texts to make your book. Exported media are not automatically analyzed.
  • Your book and the selected messages are kept until you delete the project or 90 days pass without changes.
